Educational series on environmental preservation launched in Oman

Students will be taught to be responsible towards natural resources so they can help protect and preserve the environment.

The cause of environment got a boost when Dr Hamood Al Harthy, undersecretary at the Ministry of Education for education and curricula, launched a new educational series on environmental preservation, at Cultural Club.

Dr Saif Al Shaksi, CEO of the National Field Research Centre (NFRC), stressed on a point made by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said on the occasion of the UN Conference on Environment and Development in 1992 where he had said: "The conservation of the environment is the responsibility of all of us. Therefore, man, wherever he lives, must contribute to this conservation and must deal with it rationally."

Al Shaksi also announced the establishment of the NFRC for Environmental Conservation, where, in accordance to the Royal Decree issued, the centre will focus on field research on environment conservation and encourage researchers, and Omani students.

Dr Saif Al Shaksi hoped that the importance of environmental education is one of the main reasons behind establishing the centre.

Asma Al Balushi, head of department of science curricula development, said the Ministry of Education would develop techniques and methods of teaching environmental studies and stressed that it was important to focus on this aspect of education.

"Students will be able to benefit from this study programme as well as be aware of preserving our unique natural environment," Asma added.

As new generations are being groomed as future leaders of our nation, they must play a part in preserving the natural environment for those who come after them.

"This project is one of the many where we will try and give the student a role in preserving our country's natural wealth," she said.

Through these studies, students will learn to be self reliant and responsible towards their communities as well as provide knowledge about natural resources and their role in protecting them and preserving the environment.
