An Israeli woman living in the US is reportedly suing Kuwait Airways for barring her from a flight between New York City and London because she has an Israeli passport.
Iris Eliazarov, who is pregnant, and her husband David Nektalov bought their tickets from a travel agent but when they arrived at John F. Kennedy Airport in NYC she was refused permission to board because of her passport, New York Daily News reported. Nektalov has an American passport.
Eliazarov, who moved to the US 15 years ago, aged 11, said the incident on November 1, 2014, reminded her of black American woman Rosa Parks who sparked national protest in 1955 when she was ordered to sit at the back of the bus because of her skin colour.
“I didn’t think a discrimination like this could exist in America, in JFK (airport), in New York City,” her husband told the Daily News.
“If they want to operate here, they have to obey our laws. Sixty years ago blacks weren’t allowed to ride buses. This is not about money. You have to make a stand.”
It is the second such case against Kuwait Airways in the past year.
Last year, a federal court ruled Kuwait Airways' policy not to allow Israeli citizens on board did not violation anti-discrimination laws.
