Dubai expat sees value in 2020 web addresses

A Dubai expat has snapped up a number of Expo 2020-related web domains in the hope of selling them on to prospective buyers.
Most of the 97 web addresses that Scottish expat Tom Milne acquired include some reference to 2020 along with a tourist element, like: 2020dubaitours.com, 2020expoconcerts.com and 2020expoconcerts.com.
Milne says he hopes to sell the collection, which cost close to $2,000 to register on GoDaddy.com, for millions of dollars.
“The cost is peanuts to be honest. I bought them all through GoDaddy and probably the most expensive one was something like $20, and that's why I bought a lot of them. For me right now I've got to keep renewing them yearly because I've not set any of them up and running, but one guy has advised me that I should open up the best one and then advertised the other ones on there and have a huge 'for sale' banner rolling around,” he said.
Milne, who runs his own company supplying oil rig equipment, admits he has little experience in the business of selling web domains, and so has relied on advice from those more experienced, particularly when it comes to pricing the value of the domains.
“I talked to one guy who has done this kind of thing before and he advised me if I wanted sell them all as a batch, ask for $20 million. He says ask for that and then negotiate from there,” he said.
Milne says with a number of other major events taking place in 2020, like the Olympics in Tokyo and the UEFA European finals, which take place across the continent, some of the non-Dubai web addresses could be sold separately for those.
He says he has only started marketing the web addresses in recent weeks.
“I've not really started marketing yet. I've talked to one local guy who is involved with the government and he's sort of putting out feelers for me,” said.
