New York: Sheikh Dr. Badr bin Mohammed Al Hinai, Oman's Ambassador to the Republic of Austria and its Permanent Delegate to the International Atomic Energy AGENCY (IAEA) delivered the Sultanate's speech before the 58th regular session of the general conference of IAEA.
The Sultanate affirmed that regional and international cooperation to prepare for and respond to nuclear and radiological emergencies has become an indispensable necessity.
He said that Sultanate of Oman strives to enhance its infrastructure to prepare for and respond to the radiological and nuclear emergencies through a national project for TECHNOLOGICAL cooperation with IAEA.
He affirmed that the Sultanate joins hands with the rest of the AGCC countries to develop a regional plan to prepare for and respond to radiological and nuclear emergencies and build national capacities of regional centre for nuclear or radiological emergencies.
He expressed the appreciation of the Sultanate for the support provided to IAEA in developing a regional plan. IAEA has reviewed the draft plan and attended the field exercise, which was took place in December 2013 in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Sheikh Dr. Badr bin Mohammed Al Hinai, the Sultanate's Ambassador to the Republic of Austria and its Permanent Delegate to the IAEA added that the Sultanate of Oman attaches great interest to avail water and ensure maximum utilisation to meet its current and future needs.
The support provided by IAEA to the Sultanate in this area has enabled the Sultanate to identify the gaps in data, improve and build national capacities for the collection and ANALYSIS of this data.
Sheikh Dr. Al Hinai, expressed the satisfaction of the Sultanate for extending the cooperation agreement for the Arab countries in Asia with relation to research, development and training in nuclear sciences and TECHNOLOGY (ARASIA Agreement), which was promoted by IAEA.
The Sultanate has been very keen on participating at the different events for ARASIA as such project complement the national projects for cooperation between the Sultanate and IAEA.
He also said that the Sultanate of Oman supports the final communique of the nuclear security summit, which was held in The Hague in May 2014. It urges for commitment to the joint aims namely nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation of the nuclear weapons and use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
On the sidelines of the event, the Sultanate's delegation comprising representatives of the Supreme Council for Planning, the Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs and Sultan Qaboos University held coordination meetings with the Technical Cooperation Team of the IAEA to discuss the current and future technical cooperation projects with the AGENCY.
The delegation also participated in the seminar on disposal of depleted nuclear fuel, radioactive wastes and finding safe and sustainable solution for disposal.
