Chinese firms have priced out European companies that had intended to bid to build Kuwait’s new international airport, with several pulling out of the tender process, Kuwait Times has reported.
The head of one of the companies that has withdrawn from the bidding process accused the Kuwaiti government of preferring the cheapest option over quality.
The new airport is planned to have a capacity of 25 million passengers, more than tripling the current facility’s capacity of 8 million, and COST $6bn to build.
The chosen design by the British Foster Co. is a three-sided terminal with symmetrical departure gate wings, each spanning 1.2km, which represent Kuwait’s traditional dhow sailing boats.
It has been designed to accommodate future expansion up to 50 million passengers.
The tender process is open until November 2.
